We're amazed how few SME companies actually know where their data is, or how few take adequate backup precautions.

We find files distributed across multi PCs, multiple live versions and emails stored locally on each PC (many ISP systems are like this). A pre-requisite of sharing is central storage; otherwise you will always struggle.

Microsoft Small Business Server can be bought for under £250 and provides for versatile email, data sharing and backup. It has a greatly enhanced functionality over that provided by simple file sharing on a PC or "online" ISP systems.

Backup should be daily and complete. Fire and theft precautions should be taken; take a tape home or use a media rated fire safe.
